The european consumer credit market

Key statistics, figures and studies about the european credit market

Located in 7 european countries, Cofidis is clearly a reference in distant consumer credit : in 2003, it represented 4341 million euros of consumer credits outstanding. This leadership led us to publish the Cadran, the first european observatory on consumer credit : Its role is to observe the market and provide statistics and studies about credit habits in many european countries.

The european consumer credit market in 2003 grew at the same average rhythm as the last 10 years, i.e. 5%.

Although consumer credit is not a totally new service, statistics show that use of this type of funding became widespread only very recently. The long-reluctant europeans, preferring cash or family support, converted in the second half of the 90s. Between 1996 and 2000, the european growth rate of outstanding consumer credit showed in our studies an annual performance of between 5.8% and 9.1%. These statistics clearly reflects changes in the European attitude towards consumer credit.

Studies show that credit is gaining ground among European consumers as a budget management tool. The european consumer lending market is therefore growing and given added momentum by countries where it is structurally underdeveloped.
